These include fashion garments, figurative art dolls, art journals and textiles, and are made using woven fabrics, knit, crochet and wet felting techniques. My studio is a peaceful haven away from everything really.Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11312360125833186005noreply@blogger.comBlogger36125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574181455736660525.post-39764001902551605822016-08-31T00:59:00.001-07:002016-08-31T00:59:39.627-07:00What a memory and "the flower"

Today I made a piece of memory cloth. These are my totally over the top, fabric and lace collages, lightly stitched together. I have called it "the flower".

I love making these. They are quick and so rewarding and I can daydream about the pieces. Who used that doily and who crocheted that piece of lace and how come I ended up with them? What is their story? They really do beckon - tell me tell me.

My need to make this stemmed from a gift from my mum yesterday. She gave me 2 hankies; the one with blue flowers was the last Christmas gift my Dad gave to her just before he died, 34 years ago. The second, was one of my Nan's. I remember her as always crocheting her newest coat. Her hanky has a hand crocheted edge. I'll never know if she did crochet it, but am hopeful she did. It is so soft and must be nearly 100 years old now. Then I went searching to find other hanky treasures. I found a hand painted one from my dear friend Helen, which she gave me more than 15 years ago. Then the 4th treasure is a daintily hand embroidered monogrammed one. The embroidery is so neat and tiny with it's 'A'. Another treasure.

But can I cut them up for my memory cloths? Not likely! I would love to be a fly on the wall to see what my granddaughters do with them many moons from now. Especially my Gwenhwy who is a real kindred spirit.
enjoy and happy creating Ann

I have been perusing my old cloth paper and scissors magazines and playing with mixed media. Yeh!

Here is today's finished effort inspired by graffiti doodle houses in magazine #52 Jan/Feb 2014. I must admit this is the second go as I painted over my first attempt. I am determined to use the paints I have so am quite limited. I do love the jacquard textile yellow glaze on the background and the houses are glazed using this too. It is quite glossy and a bit cutesy but it feels good to play again. The wonderful thing is I have no expectations of myself so can just play quickly using lots of techniques.

I have also been visiting all my old journals. It's like I have lost the last 4.5 years of my life. Nothing done much at all after January 2012 when I restarted working in the health industry. I can't say working in health was good for my creative health! boo hoo! It is time to start again!

But I did discover some wonderful drawings I did prior to this time of my imagined stump dolls. All very gentle. I just love them and feel quite proud discovering these. Working with mixed media and finding these drawings has opened up my heart to lots of possibilities for my art going forward. I have direction if I dare!

I am determined to make art every day! enjoy! regards Ann
Broke never ceases to amaze me. This is what I woke to this morning looking out my west side window. A yellow misty morn.

These guys weren't too sure when I opened the door to venture out to the studio. He was only about 10m away. They thought I wasn't too much of a threat so continued to graze which is always a delight. I know it sounds really cheesy but the maggies were singing their beautiful song and then the kookaburra started laughing. I just soaked it all up, what a wonderful way to start the day.
I am not a gardener and these succulents are left to run riot under the pine tree. How wonderful is mother nature to create these amazing flower colours.

Yesterday I played with some acrylic paint, stencils, stamps and gelipad printing with Marion at scrapneeds. It was fun to play again with a like minded soul. Just getting colour and a figure onto paper felt so wonderful. I didn't worry about it looking wonderful or getting it perfect, it was just play time with what was available and I had a wonderful time.

Today I really want to play some more. I just loved this and want to start to fill up my new journal. It is a beautiful creative journal with heavyweight cardstock from ranger, so it can take all sorts of mixed media.

Let the playtime begin! At long last I say. Have a wonderful day and enjoy!
New Beginnings

Last week, I retired from paid work after 40 years. It is the most bizarre and strangest
feeling.

Where does one start to be retired with no more routine, no
more having to do anything for anyone else, no more compliance and most
importantly no one to talk to during the day?
During the final stages of my working life I have been constrained by
compliance for accreditation, legislation, standards, risk management, oh&s
and on it goes. I was good at it
and it was so necessary working in the health industry, but I must admit it did constrain my creativity.

Last week I felt a little lost. Everyone says you have to give yourself time to
recover when retiring. When I reread the above I do
need to recover; to recover my sense of play, my creativity, what and who I am
again. It was so easy to let work
overtake! I have struggled to write, to create, to make
dolls over the last 5 years and when I realise how constrained by compliance I
have been, is it no wonder! So here I
am, retired, and, I have made a doll in the first week.
Wow!

2 weeks ago I had the amazing opportunity to do a class with
Linda Misa. The amazingness was being surrounded by like-minded women who love
to make dolls, who love to play, who I can talk to easily about anything, of
whom I am in awe! We played with gelli
printing on fabric and paper and sculpted with creative paper clay to make a
head which was painted using black gesso as a base. All fun and very
interesting techniques. It was such a slow paced class where we all had time to
enjoy the process and the company without stress and tension. It was a lovely weekend and it just happened
to be mine and Linda’s birthday weekend.

During class I also met a new dollmaker who has had a
profound effect on me. She is
passionate, wants to learn so much, but struggles with health issues, so is
having trouble completing her first doll.
She realises the healing effect of dollmaking already and has shared
this with me. This is my first doll in 2
years, which is a very sad state of affairs when I consider myself a dollmaker,
but I can slowly feel the passion returning, the love of making a figure to
represent my feelings, a way of healing, slowly returning.

I have been very slow to finish, but I finally have. I have called her "New Beginnings" which is such an apt title for a piece to represent the next stage of my
life. I love the way she is just
hovering just above the ground: about to
take off?

Her hands are cloth with a clay thumb; her face is clay; her
upper arms, feet and legs and body, are all cloth. Cloth is my passion and I have always been
such a purist, but this class played with an interesting technique of
‘connecting’ clay to cloth or clay to clay which is an easy way to get the
shape you want. I did struggle with making clay feet but decided to sculpt my
own feet from cloth.

Another interesting technique was painting a base of black
gesso over clay or cloth, then using a flesh toned paint, criss crossing with a
dry brush to achieve an antique look. I really like this look and it was an
easy way to get shadows where you need them by using the black base.

I have used my gelli printed muslin and cotton to make cords and to use for her skirt. I have made marks on the skirt with running stitch using one strand of thread in similar colours. I like the look. I have used an A4 sheet of gelli printed paper for the hat which I have machine embroidered. I like her hat and hats really are my signature.

So a wonderful start to my retirement and new beginning to the rest of my life. I hope you like
her. Enjoy your creativity and have fun. regards Ann

I'm not one for going over what happened in the previous year but like to look forward to what I would like to do in the coming year. I like to have wishes and goals for myself. They are more like promises to myself to do things I really love.

Over the last month I have trialled a new pattern called Zelda, for a clothing designer Pearl Red Moon, made some gifts, and have thoroughly enjoyed myself, making stuff.

Here is my Zelda, top designed by Pearl Red Moon.

You can find the pattern here:

blog: www.pearlredmoon.com
online shop: http://boho-banjo-art-to-wear.myshopify

My thoughts on the pattern: It is very simple to sew with lots of scope for wonderful variation. I would definitely use the full page pattern and get it printed at office works. It did take me a good few hours to put the tiles together and I was itching to just sew it up. I sewed up the small size taking it in a bit as I am between a 12 and 14 these days. I made it in light cottons and it looks great. The box feature would look better in a knit or fabric which drapes well, in my opinion. The cotton doesn't drape well so I was disappointed with how this sat. But it is a lovely, easy to sew top and I would recommend it. It is a top to have fun with.
This is the beach/dance bag front and back which I made for Harper for her 8th birthday. Made from an old pair of jeans with some pretty button embroidery, and fabric and frill added to the bottom. Everyone liked it and I was thrilled with it. It's a nice roomy bag for beach towels or dance shoes and lots of stuff!

This is not a good picture as I forgot to take a photo, but this was taken when I gave it to my friend for her birthday. It is a finely crocheted neckpiece working in Valdani thread, on a 1.5 size hook. It looked lovely and was inspired by a pattern in the 2013 Vogue Crochet magazine, a favourite.

What is it? The most bizarre private collection of old and new artworks and artefacts in the country, Set in an amazing museum space of sandstone, rusted ironwork and lots of glass, it is a spectacle to behold. Now i get pretty bored with these types of activities but did manage to last an hour and a half. Wonders will never cease.

It was so bizarre, such a torture of art and sculpture and installation and absolutely head shaking stuff! But a priviledge to see!

Fat car was a porche, still slightly recognisable, what a bizarre and expensive statement about consumerism!

We did manage to see some more of the Derwent river on which Hobart sits, travelling to the museum on the Mona Roma ferry. Try and imagine this panorama, top to bottom is left to right!

Today was a cloudy day and not so cold and we managed to walk quite a few km as well.

We did also manage a wonderful lunch at the Harbour Lights Cafe which was awarded I Love Food best 2014 cafe and it sure was good! Recipe past down through the generations for a wonderful egg and meatball lasagne. Delicious!
We have been lucky this time enjoying some wonderful food and wine. Sadly, or luckily, only one 'menu touristica dud'.

One of the nicest pinot noirs has been the 2013 Pooleys, such a lovely, mellow, soft, beautiful wine, quite scarce now apparently. I have to bring a bottle home to share with Lee and John.

We've also enjoyed a quaffing sparkly, ninth island by Pipers Brook. Many glasses actually! 😄

Food highlights have been a local charcuterie platter at the Grape food and wine bar, an italian, meringue topped salted caramel cheesecake ( i loved the addition of the meringue and will definitely try this) and smoked local bacon with maple syrup for breaky both from Maldini's a very nice Italian restaurant. I love their customer service ethic!

Ah life sure is good on this holiday

Yesterday we did something totally out of character and went on an adventure tour to Bruny Island. What fun. Starting from Hobart we were bussed and ferried over to the island by our young tour guide who was quite a character. He reminded me of David Wenham in Sea Change and Richard Roxburgh from Far out East. Yes we are definitely ABC fans! He was a funny guy, so inquisitive and very good at his job,

Bruny Island is made up of a north and south island connected by 'the neck',
a dirt road along a thin connecting strip of land, all natural. Some describe it as the Whitsundays of the south. I have to agree. The water is so clear and brilliant in colour and it is as magical as the Whitsundays.

Our boat trip started at Adventure Bay, along the coast with some of the highesst dolomite sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere. The combination of algae and sea water created some amazing colour in the rocks, but sad to say this was very difficult to capture on my iphone.

We headed down to Bridge Rock and back again out in the great southern ocean and boy it was very cold. But, It was amazing to see so many birds and marine animals in their natural habitat. We saw lots of seals, an albatross, dolphins, mutton birds diving for fish in great flocks after flying from Alaska, rare sticky beak oyster birds with the funniest bright orange long dangly beaks, to name a few. You can see the male seals in this pic. They grow quite large and live about 15 years and are segregated from the females while they are birthing and looking after their young. What a life!
It was an amazing day and highlight of the trip.
Jo and I travelled by car up to Coffs Harbour for 5 days of fun and friviolity with like minded souls. It is hard yakka! So having a break decided to write on my blog

I am so inspired by my beautiful home in winter. It is a rainy day today but all so very orange! I've had rainbows and rain and the sun is really trying to peak through. I love the photo of the early morning spider web and I actuallly managed to capture the rainbow on my trusty lumix. We have had hundreds of oranges which Greg juices each morning. Sadly I can't eat them due to allergies, but they sure do look amazing!

Every time I see a rainbow it reminds me of my dear granddaughter, Gwenhwyfar. I used to ring her every time I saw one, "can you see it Gwenhwy?" Poor kid she's 2 hours away, so how could that ever happen? smile!

So here it is Gwenhwy. I can't resist!

Enjoy!

Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11312360125833186005noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574181455736660525.post-22472772608932090032013-06-25T18:23:00.001-07:002013-06-25T18:23:53.187-07:00beautiful irish crochetMy friend Erica, fondly referred to as Madame Google, shared a link to this amazing site.

Here is an amazing garment by Elena Statkevich on the Irish Crochet Lab Website

I just want to sit and do this for the rest of my life. thanks Erica

have fun crocheting hugs Ann
Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11312360125833186005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574181455736660525.post-19529312549680387002013-06-25T18:17:00.001-07:002013-06-25T18:17:23.848-07:00A new dollIt has been an exciting time for our doll club. We are helping Gloria prepare for our 20th anniversary retreat in August at Coffs Harbour. This is so exciting. 5 days of dolls with some very talented US doll makers. Can't get better than that! smile!

At our last doll club meeting last Saturday we had the unveiling of our challenge dolls inspired by the santos cage dolls.

You can see the dolls here on our Hello Dollies Blog

And here is my doll. My shrine to crochet. I love crochet and really enjoyed making her. She is all cloth with crocheted motifs. The base was a light casing I bought at a nursery. I hope you like her.

have a lovely day Annie
Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11312360125833186005noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574181455736660525.post-74806911027317676752013-05-19T05:26:00.001-07:002013-05-19T05:26:02.941-07:00My jacket shawl if finally finishedI love this time of year, today we had a gentle wind and beautiful sunny sky. It was really magic watching the knee long grass gently blowing in the wind. A gentle undulation and most meditative to watch. How magic. I wish I had taken a photo. The colour of my day was a gentle orange of the grasses, the new oranges on our citrus trees and new bird of paradise stems standing tall. The orange against the green is a beautiful contrast.

I have finally finished my shawl jacket from Nicky Epstien's book block by block and love it.

it is worn off the shoulder and hangs quite low at the sides and off the arms.

Here are some photos of front, back and the complete jacket. I'm not sure if I'll sew up the sides but it sure does look fabulous. The pattern has knitted in sleeves but being a woman of a certain age, I think I'll make some arm hugs instead which are easily removed.

This is the front

This is the back,

and this is the complete jacket. Buttons just need to be sewn on and it's ready to wear.

It's great to snuggle into.

Otherwise I'm madly working on producing my rpl for my diploma of practice management. I'm reallly enjoying this.

The other thing I really want to do is make some crocheted flowers for my new meditation buddah. He holds a large flat dish in which they would sit beautifully.

Until next time. have fun and enjoy Ann

Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11312360125833186005noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574181455736660525.post-8480104352890180562013-05-14T15:12:00.001-07:002013-05-14T15:12:30.960-07:00A beautiful weekendI had a lovely mothers' day weekend. My sisters and I took mum to see Eurobeat at the Joan Sutherland performing arts centre in Penrith. It was a fun, funny musical comeday, a takeoff of the eurovision competition. We all really enjoyed it and it was a first for mum, she hadn't seen anything like that before.

Mothers' day breaky was at Magenta Shores, then catching up briefly with my sister Lorna. This gal is an amazing inspiration to me.

I did make her a bracelet for her 50th birthday. It was fun watching her trying to work out how it was made. It is made from buttons with shanks removed, then glued onto a bracelet using the strong E6000 glue. And thanks to Gloria at Annes Glory Box for these wonderful buttons. I made myself one too.

Then we drove up to Allworth for afternoon tea. Isn't this a lovely pic of me Gwenhwy, Griff and Olive.

Sadly Chris and family couldn't make it as Chris was working but we'll catch up soon. He hadn't seen daylight for a week as working underground. I don't mind, I am so lucky. It's like mothers' day for me every day when I see my kids and grandies.

The green jacket is coming along wonderfully, I'm up to the front bands. I've decided not to knit in the sleeves but to make some arm warmers instead which will look like sleeves and are able to be taken off when I only need warmth around my chest. Pics next time.

I've been enjoying The Voice. Gosh there are some amazing singers this season. My favourites have to be Luke, Harrison, Celia and Miss Murphy. Let's see how they go! smile!

I've also started to upgrade some qualifications and am madly working on my RPL for Diploma of Practice Management. Wish me luck!

Have fun and enjoy every moment

hugs Ann
Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11312360125833186005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574181455736660525.post-83730595052464843532013-04-13T21:36:00.001-07:002013-04-13T21:36:49.681-07:00What a week, we are so luckyIt has been an up and down week.

Yesterday Chris and his children were in a car accident and luckily everyone is ok. It was a real wakeup call. We truly are so lucky and blessed. He rolled the car in thick fog and noone had any injuries at all. It is surely a miracle.

It really helps to talk about it. I guess that is an important part of dealing with trauma. Seeing the car upside down with stuff everywhere was such a shock. But they're ok. I'm not religious but at times like this I really think there must be someone who looks after us. thank you, thank you, thank you.

On a creative note, on Wednesday mum and I went to see War Horse at the theatre. The puppetry and puppeteers were amazing. The whole show was wonderful. The set was so simple and amazing. Mostly drawings computer projected onto an undulation of fabric across the back of the stage. I loved it.

I'm knitting again and it is my meditation. Greg says if I'm not knitting I'm asleep, how true!

Here is my neck warmer just finished using a 50:50 wool acrylic called Splendour. It is so soft and knitted up lovely. I did undo it 4 times to get it out of one ball. Pattern, yarn and needles were a lovely birthday present from Lesley last year. what a wonderful present.

When in Sydney I bought a passionfruit macaron kit from Andriano Zumbo at Star City. I made them up and they worked. woohoo! they were so delicious.

And finally, yes I am so very luckly. Here's my view from my breakfast area this morning. A beautiful crisp slightly foggy Autumn morning in Broke. We don't get any colour change sadly, but it is still beautiful. Yes I am very lucky indeed.

have fun Ann
Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11312360125833186005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574181455736660525.post-77636969955767688632013-02-16T14:27:00.001-08:002013-02-16T14:27:17.578-08:00January and February babiesWe had lovely birthday lunches for Zac, Ashleigh and Harper in January and February.
